Think parting/sectioning is time consuming?  Think again!  Don’t you want to get it right the first time?

Parting sets us up for success, keeps us on track as well as keeps the hair we are not cutting at the time out of our way!  Our model in the video above has very dense hair, most of which sits at the top of his head.  Without structured partings on this head we stand the chance to get lost in our cut or accidentally cut hair we don’t want to cut and lose the shape we are going for.

Tools of choice:

Professional Long Cutting Comb – (we're using Ivory for contrast to the dark hair).

Why this comb?  The spaces between the teeth at the wider end are of medium width, not too far apart.  The medium spacing will give us just the right amount of control when creating the part.

Professional Dry Sectioning Clips

Don’t you just cringe when hair slips out of clips?  Not anymore, these clips are absolutely perfect for holding dry OR wet hair out of our way, especially when working with dense hair.  The silicone ‘hammock’ prevents the slip!

We know it helps to comb the hair in the direction we want it to travel before we part the hair for the cut.  But we sometimes may be in a hurry and not pay attention to the detail in the parting; we may have stray hair in the parting. What’s great about this technique is that it will get us into the habit of clean partings to set us up correctly for the area we are going to cut.

How to Part & Pin For Control:

Begin with the wider end of the Sam Villa Long Cutting Comb. Comb the hair up and away from you at about a pinky width below where you actually want the part to live. Come into the hair with the parting tooth and notch out the hair – make this parting clean, removing any stray hairs in the part – this parting tooth is great for achieving a perfect part!

Now, come into the hair with the fine teeth of the comb just above the part and comb the hair up and away from you. Pick up a Sam Villa Dry Sectioning Clip and follow through by placing the clip horizontally just above the part.

Continue with the parting tooth of the comb to notch out stray hairs and extend the part further back. As previously done, come back into the hair with the fine teeth of the comb just above the part. Comb the hair up and away from you. Pick up another Sam Villa Dry Sectioning Clip and follow through by placing the clip horizontally just above the part

Using the comb with the addition of the clip sets us up for the hair on top of the head to be clearly out of our way.  We now have a clean area in which we can concentrate our cut with either shear over comb, texture shear over comb, clipper over comb – whatever technique you want to apply.   No worrying about the mass amount of hair falling into our cutting zone.

We challenge you to part and clip – make it part of your set up - set yourself up for success, we know you will find yourself thinking, ‘why haven’t I done this all along?’
