WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY REVERSIBLE BLADES?
Sam Villa Signature Series Reversible Blending Shear has an ambidextrous grip and tangs (finger rests) on both finger holes. This allows us to change our hand positions, and cut different angles that traditional blending shears can’t offer.
WHAT ARE THE THREE METHODS OF CUTTING WHEN USING A BLENDING SHEAR?
- The first method is to remove length and create diffused lines using a stationary guide.
- The second method is to create soft texture and layers through point cutting.
- The third method is a "pinch & talk" technique, also known as slide cutting or out cutting, to create wispy or textured ends.
REMOVING LENGTH WITH A BLENDING SHEAR
Watch as Jesse takes a horizontal section of hair, and places the shear in with the teeth facing up at the desired cutting guide. There’s a small amount of hair that is cut. When Jesse flips the shear with the teeth facing down and cuts, there’s a more significant amount of hair cut.
This technique gives you the ability to customize your haircuts! By holding the shear in a specific way you have the choice of how much bulk you want to remove, and how much diffusion is needed.
Hot tip: This technique eliminates the need to go back into a haircut with a blending shear which happens often when you’ve used a traditional shear to cut!
POINT CUTTING WITH A BLENDING SHEAR
For the clients that want a razor cut style, the Reversible Blending Shear will achieve a similar look using a point cutting technique.
The blending shear will cut into the ends yet eliminate any harsh, deep lines. Point cutting creates deep “V’s” into each section so the blending shear helps to diffuse the ends while they’re being cut. Blending shears do not cut every hair which provides a more “feathered” or wispy effect for those that desire this look.
Once you’ve chosen your cutting guide and have established your layering technique:
- Using a Sam Villa Signature Series Short Cutting Comb, carve out a 1-inch thick, 2-inch long vertical section.
- Point cut into the section at your cutting guide with Sam VIlla Signature Series Reversible Blending Shear.
“PINCH & TALK” TECHNIQUE – SLIDE CUTTING WITH A BLENDING SHEAR
The third method is a common technique we use to debulk the ends after a haircut, also known as “pinch & talk” or slide cutting.
- Gather a 1-inch thick piece of hair and hold out at a 45 degree angle.
- Pinch the ends of the hair and hold tightly.
- Hold your Sam VIlla Signature Series Reversible Blending Shear wide open with the blades facing down.
- Press the base of the blades (where the blades are connected) onto the root of the section.
- Gently close the blades as you glide down the section to reach the ends.
Using a blending shear for a “pinch & talk” or slide cutting technique will give us the opportunity to cut less hair when debulking, eliminating the concern of carving out too much hair!
