How Do You Create Red Carpet Waves?

In this hair tutorial, Sam Villa, Redken 5th Avenue Global Artistic Ambassador and the Co-Founder Chief Creative Officer of Sam Villa Company shares the finished look for a visual of the two different styles you’ll create.

Follow the step by step below and watch as Sam recreates Red Carpet Waves in the video tutorial using the Marcel iron.

  • Start on the right side of your client at the part on top of the head.
    • You can use a middle or side-part.
  • Carve out a diagonal back section, 2-inches thick and 3-inches wide.
  • Hold the Marcel Curling Iron in your right hand.
  • Over-direct the section forward to align (parallel) with the corner of the right eye.
  • Position your hand with the left wrist and palm facing up, use your left forefinger and thumb to pinch the point at which the hair is aligned with the corner of the eye.
    • This determines where the first ridge will lay.
    • This hand position will be referred to as "pulse", i.e: checking your pulse.
    • The opposite hand position, the back of the hand flat and facing up is referred to as "time", i.e: checking the time.
  • To start, your palm and wrist should remain flat and facing up, the back of the hand flat and facing down.
  • Hold the Marcel iron vertically.
    • Mist Redken Iron Shape 11 on the section for heat protectant and added control.
  • Place the barrel behind the section touching the hair next to where the fingers are pinching.
  • Keep the spoon open.
  • Keep tension while pinching the hair and turn the wrist to "time".
  • Wrap the hair around the barrel and meet back at the starting position.
  • Your hand should return to the "pulse" position.
    • Slide the hair up to meet the other hair wrapped around the barrel.
  • Twist the wrist to "time" and wrap the hair around the barrel again.
  • The pattern should be: pulse, time, wrap, pulse.*
    • Hot tip: The three key elements are heat, tension and cooling.
    • As you wrap, the heat will remain constant as will the tension.
  • Continue this same pattern to reach the ends.*
  • To ensure you curl the very tips, slide them to the right towards the inside of the barrel.
  • Close down the spoon, and turn the iron to a diagonal (towards the face).
  • Hold the iron at a diagonal for a few seconds with the spoon closed.
  • Hold out your palm at the bottom of the barrel and drop the curl gently into the palm.
  • Mist Redken Fashion Work 12 onto the curl held in the palm.
  • Compress the curl using both palms (sandwich the curl).
    • This is super important as you are allowing the curl to cool down.
  • Count to a few seconds and release.
  • Comb from roots to ends using Sam Villa Signature Series Wide Cutting comb to soften the curl.

Why use Fashion Work 12? It’s a brushable hairspray!

Follow the step by step below and watch as Sam recreates softer ridge-waves in the video tutorial using the wand!

  • Start on the left side of your client at the part on top of the head.
    • You can use a middle or side-part.
  • Carve out a diagonal back section, 2-inches thick and 3-inches wide.
    • Mist the section with Redken Iron Shape 11 for heat protectant and added control.
  • Hold the wand in your right hand.
  • Place the barrel of the wand horizontal, underneath the section at the root.
  • Start in a "pulse" hand position.
  • Pinch the hair directly below the base of the barrel.
  • Twist your hand to "time" and wrap around the wand.
  • Continue the pulse, time, wrap pattern until the entire section is complete.
  • Drop the hair into the palm of your hand.
  • Mist the curl with Redken Fashion Work 12 and close both palms onto the curl for cool down.
  • Comb from roots to ends using Sam Villa Signature Series Wide Cutting comb to soften the curl.

Notice that these waves have much softer ridges.

You can determine the direction in which the wave falls (toward the face or away from the face) by which hand you hold the iron or wand in. In the section above, the wand was held in the right hand to direct the hair towards the face. For this section, we will hold the wand in the left hand to direct the hair away from the face.

  • Carve out a diagonal back section, 2-inches thick and 3-inches wide.
    • Mist the section with Redken Iron Shape 11 for heat protectant and added control.
  • Hold the wand in your left hand.
  • Place the barrel of the wand horizontal, underneath the section at the root.
  • Start in a "pulse" hand position.
  • Pinch the hair directly below the base of the barrel.
  • Twist your hand to "time" and wrap around the wand.
  • Continue the hand positions-pulse, time, wrap until the entire section is wrapped.
  • Turn the wand to vertical and hold for a few seconds.
  • Drop the hair into the palm of your hand.
  • Mist with Redken Fashion Work 12 and close both palms onto the curl to cool down.
  • Comb from roots to ends using Sam Villa Signature Series Wide Cutting comb to soften the curl.
